Matthieu Thonon, musicoloog (ULB, 2004), is sinds 2009 bibliothecaris bij het MIM en sinds 2017 verantwoordelijk voor de audiovisuele collectie. Deze collectie omvat geluidsapparatuur, van fonografen tot mp3-spelers, en de bijbehorende dragers, van wasrollen tot digitale bestanden. Daarnaast omvat de collectie videoproducties: concertopnames, thematische filmpjes (over schenkingen en instrumenten), de documentaireserie Traditional Music in Belgium, evenals samenwerkingsprojecten met het Africa Museum in Kenia (PRIMA-project), Gabon (RIETMA) en Rwanda (SHARE).

Matthieu Thonon werkte mee aan de tentoonstellingen SAX200 (2014) en Toots 100 (2022). Hij is curator van de tentoonstelling Sounds Matter, over de geschiedenis van de geluidsopname (2027).
