Polyphonic Performance Spaces 2025. The Sound of Brussels

Every year, the Polyphonic Performance Spaces research festival brings the best of artisticresearch to Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel.  This edition explores The Sound of Brussels: the city’s exceptionally rich sonic heritage, -past, present, and future.

How does one compose for recorder, and what can the interaction between a composer and an instrumentalist look like?

In her doctoral research at KCB and VUB, recorder player Tomma Wessel investigates contemporary recorder playing techniques. She commissioned various composers to write etudes based on her research findings, each for a specific playing technique. Three of these composers will join Tomma for a lecture-recital, in which they will talk about the etudes they created and discuss their collaborations with this recorder player extraordinaire. Marta Gentilucci will lift the veil on her Flutters étude, for fluttertongue on tenor recorder; Frederik Neyrinck will dive into his Ganassi Echo, for glissandi on Ganassi recorder; and KCB’s own Annelies Van Parys will talk about her Étude pour les flattements, for finger vibrato (flattement) on tenor and bass recorder.
