In addition to discovering unusual instruments and their sounds, this visit invites reflection on the role of music in human life and in societies. While our Western world has gradually lost the functional aspect of music, it remains very much alive elsewhere. Under what circumstances is the gamelan played? How can a drum “speak”? What is the connection between the zampogna and spider bites?
