In the time of Friedemann Bach

A musical journey for two traversos

The Sonatas for Two Flutes without Basso Continuo by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach hold a prominent place in today’s flute repertoire. They are performed both on the modern transverse flute and on historical instruments. Written at different stages of the life of Johann Sebastian Bach’s son, these works reach remarkable heights of virtuosity and musical refinement, delighting both seasoned flautists and music lovers alike.

In this programme, Bach’s sonatas are interwoven with works by Michel Blavet (1700–1768), Johann Joachim Quantz, and Georg Philipp Telemann - renowned flutists and composers, contemporaries of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, who likewise made significant contributions to the repertoire for unaccompanied flute.

Moving between enchanting and flamboyant, mysterious and playful moments, the audience will not only enjoy the performers’ outstanding virtuosity but also discover a variety of flutes, chosen according to the stylistic requirements of each piece.

This concert also provides an opportunity for the duo to present their new CD, to be released on 9 January by the Arcana label, featuring the complete set of six sonatas for two flutes by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach - appearing 35 years after the first, and until now only, historically informed recording of these works.
