Fiddlers on the Move
Every year, violinist Wouter Vandenabeele (Tamala, GFVP) brings together dozens of leading violinists for an intensive workshop and numerous concerts. This time, he is bringing the English duo Sweeney & Smith and the Swedish duo Hedin & Meidell to Brussels.
Sam Sweeney and Grace Smith are among England’s most remarkable fiddle players and are known for their powerful playing and deep connection to traditional music. Sam, winner of a BBC Folk Award, is also known as “the best fiddle player in Britain.” Grace, a rising star with her acclaimed trio and her collaboration with Katie Doherty & the Navigators, brings a breath of fresh air to the tradition. As innovative artists, they draw on the past while composing new works, creating music that is both rooted and boldly contemporary.
Swedish musicians Johan Hedin and Ida Meidell bring folk music and early music together. Their rich and nuanced sound blends old and new, creating something timeless. With virtuosity and sensitivity, they bring centuries-old melodies to life as if they were written for today. Ida’s journey through different traditions and baroque music, combined with Johan’s innovative approach to the nyckelharpa, makes their duo a captivating and intimate musical experience.
