The Recycled Orchestra of Cateura

The Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, directed by Favio Chávez, is made up of children and young people from low-income families living in the Bañado Sur community, located around the Cateura landfill in Asunción, the capital of the Republic of Paraguay. The group’s distinctive feature is their performance of musical works using instruments crafted from recycled materials found in the landfill.

Their repertoire includes classical music, folk music, Paraguayan music, Latin American music, film scores, symphonic metal, and more. The orchestra is the result of an inspiring project that aims to provide musical training to children and young people living in precarious and vulnerable conditions, using music as a motivating and empowering tool to help them learn, stay in school, develop their creativity, and access opportunities to improve their future.

In recent years, the orchestra has delighted audiences around the world, with concerts in countries such as Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States, among others.

Thanks to the support of the Embassy of Paraguay, you can see these young people in action at the MIM!
