The opera opens with the image of a forest, where Golaud (Pelléas’ brother) finds Mélisande weeping by a spring.
The budding love between the two characters unfolds scene by scene, but is disrupted by the arrival of Pelléas.
Tormented by deep jealousy as he watches Pelléas and Mélisande enganing in increasingly intense games of seduction,
Golaud succumbs to madness and hatches a plan to kill his brother, seeking to destroy the absolute love that is the source of his despair.
