Vibrations, sensations, and shared sounds
In this workshop, the artist and participants will focus on the relationship between vibration and the body, sound and silence, listening and feeling, time and space.
Sound perception is not merely an auditory experience but a cross-modal process in which the whole body participates. Building on this idea, we will explore the possibility of a multisensory experience of sound as an accessible form of engagement for Deaf and hard-of-hearing participants.
Open to both deaf and hearing participants, this workshop emphasizes our bodies’ ability to perceive vibrations through touch. Through listening, reflection, and proprioceptive exercises, participants will engage a multisensory mode of perception to deepen awareness of themselves and their surrounding environment. Valuing the uniqueness of each individual, participants will be invited to generate and sculpt sound vibrations using electronic musical instruments. By co-creating waves for themselves and others, participants will help shape a collective experience that is accessible to everyone.
Leonardo Melchionda is a guitarist and sound artist active in experimental music, free improvisation, and multidisciplinary performance. After graduating from the Conservatory of Ghent, he is now a PhD student at the Conservatory of Siena (Italy), conducting research on the relationship between music, multisensory performance, and accessibility for Deaf audiences. Among his original works are the multisensory performance Beatitudine, the music-dance duo Together/Drifting, and the solo electric guitar composition 998. He has performed with Ellen Arkbro, Anthony Braxton, Alvin Curran, Ictus Ensemble, Fritz Hauser, Kobe van Cauwenberghe, Bart Maris, and Jessie Cox, among others. His performances have been presented at venues such as Darmstädter Ferienkurse (Germany), Muziekcentrum De Bijloke, Concertgebouw Brugge, and Bozar Brussels (Belgium).
The workshop will be co-conducted with Mathias Houndjenoukon – advisor for Deaf participants – and Annarita di Bitonto – advisor for hearing participants. Sign language interpreters will be present.
