The kanun, a prominent string instrument in Arabic music, has been the backbone of ensembles and orchestras for centuries. In this solo concert, Brussels-born Mohamed-Amine El Korchi showcases the richness of this instrument, drawing on his impressive career.
He was trained for many years by the Iraqi master Souhad Najem, immersed himself in Turkish music with Tristan Driessens, and learned about the world of maqâm and taqsim through Azzouz El Houri. Further encounters with masters such as Mohamed Briouel, Khalid Mohamed Ali, and Göksel Baktagir refined his musical personality. He was also the first to translate the work of the late Said Chraibi to the kanun. His career has been crowned with awards in Fez (2021) and Rabat (2022 and 2023).
Today, he teaches kanun and Arab-Andalusian music at Muziekpublique. This afternoon concert offers a powerful introduction to a musician who brings together tradition, technique, and his own vision.
