Maracatu

Maracatu has Afro-Brazilian origins and first appeared in the state of Pernambuco in the 18th century. Its origins are not known, but it is probably linked to Candomblé and the coronation of the kings of the kingdom of Kongo (c. 1400 to 1888).

The Maracatu Nação, also known as the Maracatu de Baque Virado, is an artistic manifestation of popular and carnival culture in the metropolitan region of Recife. It has undergone transformations and changes throughout the 20th century, demonstrating its ability to adapt and endure. It is therefore an expression of African culture. Especially since the 1990s, several Maracatu groups have emerged in the Recife region and have spread throughout Brazil and, more recently, to other continents such as Europe.

The event will be a celebration of Brazilian-Congolese music and its roots. There will be a performance by Maracatu groups, capoeira and other surprises. Two of the most important Maracatu instruments recently donated to the MIM will also be on display.
