Discover the Music of Ancient Greece
In this workshop, you will have the chance to hear and play the ancient Greek lyre, a musical instrument invented thousands of years ago.
First, you will take a closer look at the sound and aesthetics of a reconstructed ancient Greek lyre, learn about the music system of antiquity, and discover how to play the lyre. Then, you will learn how to perform the Epitaph of Seikilos, the oldest complete surviving melody (with lyrics) known today. You will soon realize that this ancient musical instrument is much simpler to learn than a guitar or most modern instruments, and this is probably why it was used as a teaching tool for many young people in ancient Greece.
This unique experience is offered by SEIKILO Cultural Space and hosted by Lina Palera, a world-renowned lyricist who has performed in ancient Greek amphitheaters, museums, and international music festivals (such as Musikmesse in Germany). Apart from being an amazing musician, Lina is an equally skilled tutor with studies and teaching experience in London and Athens. Having lived in England for half a decade, Lina speaks English and Greek fluently. She will be assisted by Theodore Koumartzis.
An ancient Greek lyre will be provided to each participant during this experience. These are one-of-a-kind musical instruments, handcrafted by the world-renowned niche brand Luthieros.
No musical experience or prior training is required.
