Sounds of the Cities - Iran
A talk exploring the music and musical instruments of Iran and Kurdistan, featuring musicologist Fañch Thoraval and musician Kourosh Ghazvineh.
The first part focuses on the Iranian instruments from the late Qajar period held in the MIM collection, exploring their history as well as the circumstances surrounding their acquisition.
The second part takes us on a journey through Kurdish and Iranian musical traditions, from Iranian classical music and maqam to folk, religious and ritual music. Pieces from the Iranian classical repertoire, along with traditional songs and melodies, will bring the discussion to life through live musical examples.
An opportunity to discover the richness of Iranian musical traditions while exploring their history, instruments and cultural contexts.
Please note: A ticket for the talk also gives you access to the MIM before or after the lecture, exclusively on December 5.
Sounds of the Cities invites you to discover the musical cultures of the different migrant communities in Antwerp and Brussels between 2026 and 2028. In autumn 2026, the series will shine a spotlight on Iran’s rich musical traditions through a programme of events. Sounds of the Cities is a collaboration between Muziekpublique, the MIM, Muziekmuseum Vleeshuis and vzw Wesp / Merodefestival, with the support of the Flemish Government. The full programme can be found at klankenvandesteden.be.
