The mim's reputation is built on its extraordinary collection. With a wealth of more than 7000 musical instruments, the mim is world renowned.

The collections are looked after by a staff of scientists called 'organologists' because of their specialism in the study of musical instruments. Each of them is responsible for one or more separate collections. They are helped by a team working in the workshop for conservation and restoration. Numerically, the larger part of the collection is stored in reserves not accessible to the general public.

The mim is an active member of the MIMO project. "Musical Instrument Museums Online"'s aim is to create a single access point to digital content and information on the collections of musical instruments held in European museums. MIMO is part of the broader Europeana project.
